TOWN TRAFFIC COUNTS

What Are Traffic Counts?

Traffic counts are done at citizen requests, and to locate problems spots in town. A small machine is placed on the roadside. Two or four tubes are placed on the roadway. When a car travels over the tubes the machine registers the count and well as the speed of the vehicle. Many time traffic counts are used for commercial developers who are interested in high traffic volume as an indication of a spot to place a business. We only conduct basic traffic counts. A detailed survey is usually conducted by a certified traffic engineer hired by an outside concern.

Why do you take speed counts?

The police department receives many calls from citizens concerning speeding cars on their streets. We may place a traffic speed counter out to determine the actual amount of speeding vehicle. The traffic count report also will show in groups of 15 minutes, when the cars are speeding. We can then arrange for a radar patrol to be assigned at the problems times. Please be aware however that we will not usually assigned a radar patrol if their are infrequent speeding cars indicated on the reports. With the limited number of officers on patrol we can not justify placing a radar patrol on a street with only infrequent problems.

Can I get traffic / speed count on my street?

Contact Lieutenant Raymund Rogers with your requests. rrogers@wbpd.com Traffic counts are not done in the winter months as the roadway tubes would be damaged by snow removal equipment.
